Review: DBX 160 VU
Positives:Usually get great results when not hitting to hard. Drum mults with dry signal get good results. Have also enjoyed it on vocals, acoustic guitars, and Bass, when just hitting meters at 3:1, 4:1
Negatives:Not easy to get used to on all sources.
One of the most popular VCA compressors to date.
God I love me some VU on vocals and bass. This was the first compressor that I ever learned to use on vocals and actually liked the results. What I noticed was that meters are very slow, meaning if it looks like you are getting 5db of compression on transients, many times it is double this! The trick I think is to just get the meters to move a little tiny bit.
They have the slightest bit of low fi graininess that I find appealing.
From Dave Derr:
They have an adaptive time constant that adjusted the attack faster for transients, and slower for low frequency stuff
