Review: Phoenix Audio Drs-1R 500 Series Preamp
Positives:Great vintage and modern sounds, good price, plenty of features, great DI, great build, Cool looks!
This is a fantastic Vintage Neve style pre. Features include 70 DB gain, mic/line switch, High pass filter, phase reverse, mute, di select, 48v.
This is a Neve style pre so it has a gain knob and an output trim. There is a lot of headroom on this pre so you can drive the gain hard and pull back on the output trim as needed before it hits tape..er.. I mean your DAW. Whats is cool is that the meter shows the output level not the input. This is due to the fact that you will have a hard time overloading the input and if you do it will probably sound good! So what you are seeing on the meter is what your converter is seeing so you can avoid clipping your system
Sound wise this pre is the right amount of vintage and modern. Not a Neve clone, just a Neve style. The pre is very round with nice smooth highs. Basical;ly good for any source you want to throw at it.
For drums and high level sources the mic/line switch is also the pad, switch to line and you get something like 30DB reduction, very nice. This pre also featuires a fantastic DI section that sounds great on bass.
This is pro level Neve style preamp. If you are in the market definitely give Phoenix audio stuff a look. They make an 8 channel version of this pre along with summing boxes and plenty of other stuff.
