Review: Rupert Neve Designs Portico 5012 2 Channel Mic Preamp
Positives:Great sound, classy looks, High pass filter, silk button
Negatives:Half rack size requires kit to rack
Clean, Classy, Modern. RND 5012 is an awesome 2 channel pre from the brain of THE guy in pro audio design. This pre is much more modern sounding than vintage Neve and Neve clones. Because of the sale of Neve to AMS, Rupert cannot copy any of his old designs. Good! The portico line is solidly built with plenty of character and clean classy looks.
In use this pre is my go to for acoustic Vocals, Acoustic guitar, overheads, and hand percussion (tambourines and such). Clean without being sterile, Colored without being dirty if that makes sense!
66db gain with a +/- 6db output control. High pass filter sweepable from 20 to 250hz (nice), 48v, mute and silk. The silk I just leave on all of the time. I have never felt a need to switch it off. Metering is nice and accurate with plenty of visibility.
The pre is a definite all arounder that is great on everything you throw at it. Add to the fact this is the pre you get with the 5088 console. It is very well built and looks great in the rack. I purchased the half rack joining kit. This is a top notch pre at a decent price compared to the AMS Neve 2 channel.
